I know what people tell me where I work and elsewhere -- worst is over -- lived through the bear market -- things are looking up -- war is good for the economy.

The alternative is too dire for them to think about -- 4 down years in a row == this is something considerably worse, a deep recession with more pain coming. Average guy on the street refuses to believe it.
