You're mistreating them! :-)

i like the idea of extreme isolation for murderers, no tv, no entertainment...maybe some books to read.
I don't remember why that approach was abandoned. Probably "inhumane".

I'll bet the previous system- -flogging, stocks, isolation on distant islands- -worked no worse in terms of reform than the current one. Some learned from it; some didn't. Just like imprisonment.

The basic idea today is (sort of) to make things nasty for prisoners so that they decide to change their ways. I can see where a good public whipping, then releasing them, could do that.

And a LOT more cheaply, too.
