You said:

"You do not find that same level of understanding in the officer ranks, who know that what it really means is that the Republicans are better hawks on the backs of the poor"

I said:

"Tell that to Colin Powell."

You said:

"Powell exemplifies what I am talking about. "

Do you believe Colin Powell feels the "Republicans are better hawks on the backs of the poor"? Powell rose from the depths through sheer excellence.

I submit that Powell would argue that a person who has what it takes will find great opportunity in our military at this time.

While the Charlie Rangels of the world are "playing the race card", Colin Powell is showing minorities what determination and guts can get you.

I could vote for this man for president

He isn't running. I could vote for him, as well. But don't be confused that he shares your excessively pacifist perspective. This man will be totally supportive of creaming Iraq when the time comes.

Al, <Here's a man who, in a hawkish cabinet, has the political skills to discriminate the need and avoidance issues.>

At least the hawkish cabinet is willing to listen to Powell. Despite what you say, Powell is not a man with exceptional political skills. That may be one reason why he's reluctant to run for president. But his principles and character is strong enough to influence even the most stubborn of "chicken hawks," as you like to call them.

Contrast this with the previous administration which based their decisions on the changing winds of polls, and you'll see my point.
