so if life is that precious to them, wouldn't the death penalty then be seen as a deterrent for death penalty crimes?

I think it makes perfect sense

and, if they are fighting for their lives, they have been found guilty

I agree with you on the death penalty, LP, though I'm a recent convert to the anti-DP view. Have you, by any chance, read the article by Scott Turow, who was a member of the Illinois State DP commission, in last week's New Yorker?

I'm going to see if it's available online. Quite interesting reading.
