You mentioned you don’t get exercised about the “fetus.” I note: you are “careful” to never say baby.

Yes, I try to be careful in my choice of words. I don't confuse a fetus with a baby. And I get very exercised about babies, as I do about all persons who are endangered. I recognize, however, that everyone does not share my interest in precision. Nonetheless, I would ask a woman if she already knew the sex of her "baby" rather than "fetus," baby being short for "incipient baby." The sex of a fetus is irrelevant. When you're diapering an actual baby, it definitely makes a difference.

Or do you, as you seem to be arguing believe you are a middle of the road person on this issue?

If I am "aghast," it's because I'm trying very hard to find a common ground and I'm getting nothing but grief over it. You're fond of stories as examples so let me give you one.

Let's say that Walmart has bought a large parcel of land at the end of your block and plans to build a big-box megastore. You and your neighbors are upset because the store will bring noise and traffic that could endanger your kids. So you go to a town meeting where you encounter me and my friends. We're there to protest the Walmart not on the basis of noise and traffic but because the land contains valuable wetlands that we don't want destroyed. Are you going to send me and my buds packing because, although we are on the same side of the issue, I'm not on your side for what you consider the right reason? Or will you recognize us as allies?

We were discussing the fetus/baby that was lost due to a punch in the stomach. You want the SOB punished and so do I. Your basis is the rights of the fetus to live. My basis is the right of the mother to produce offspring. I think my approach has a better chance of success but you're not even considering it...

Regarding the trade-off, I take it that you were basing that comment on my cumulative posting on the subject of abortion and not on my posting on the question of adequately punishing those who punch pregnant women and disrupt the development of the fetus. I can deal with that explanation.

When is the last time you heard a pregnant woman say "I'm pregnant with a fetus," or "I'm having a fetus." They know it's a baby from the beginning.
