RESEARCH ALERT-Analyst sees upside to Web co. results
1/13/2003 2:00:03 PM

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan 13 (Reuters) - An analyst at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray on Monday said he sees Web companies eBay (EBAY) , Yahoo (YHOO) , Overture Services (OVER) and InfoSpace (INSP) beating expectations when they report quarterly results in the coming days and weeks.

"The earnings season starts the week with Yahoo and eBay reporting what we expect will be very strong (fourth quarter 2002) results in both cases," U.S. Bancorp analyst Safa Rashtchy said in a client note. He also said it was likely that the Internet portal and online auction giant -- along with targeted online advertising provider Overture -- will raise forecasts.

On other fronts, Rashtchy said he does not expect Internet and wireless services provider InfoSpace to issue a forecast. He said he sees Ask Jeeves (ASKJ) having "potential modest upside" to its quarter and that there is a "slight chance" the Web search company will increase its guidance.

Rashtchy also said he expects online bookseller Amazon.com (AMZN) posting in-line results and raising guidance.

He noted that major risks for the Internet industry include a slowdown in advertising spending, slower-than-expected migration to e-commerce, a failure to monetize users, and operating losses among industry players and their supporters.

Investors should assume that U.S. Bancorp has or is seeking investment banking relationships with the above companies, the firm said in a disclosure.
