Retail Sales rose 1.2% in December, with ex-auto sales remaining unchanged; both of these figures were three tenths shy of consensus forecasts. The total figure was boosted by auto sales while ex-auto sales were held back by weakness at department stores. Though somewhat disappointing relative to expectations, these figures were otherwise healthy and cap another respectable quarter for consumer spending.
