Yes the very word is arabic ... don't have the best of dictionaries here but it says that 'jabr' is an old arabic term for 'bonesetting', and that would seem to make metaphorical sense, related to the fixing or reduction or 'setting' of numerical qualities .... the prefix 'al' is of course 'el/la' in spanish or 'the' in english .... algorithm and alkali are two more on this page .... oh, and this - wait, you better sit down for this one -
