I read some stuff online about Jaynes. Seems to me the more likely explanation is that the people we think of today as being schizophrenic or whatever were considered to be oracles, prophets etc. in the past. Oracles/prophets etc. also took drugs. There has been a change in attitude to these people in society. Perhaps there has been some change in their numbers too as literacy spread and societies "modernized". The real problem with Jaynes thesis is he bases it on some local events in the Middle East and so it doesn't explain what happened in the rest of the World. It just doesn't make sense...
