Hawk, I think the Palestinians mirror what they see in Israel, it's close, successful, more powerful, and in many respects what the majority would like to see in a Palestinian state: modern, democratic.

But I don't think the exclusiveness in who might be president of the possible Palestinian state is a big deal. The English were well on the way to democracy when they still had a lot of restrictions on Catholics and for a long time the US had an informal prohibition against a Catholic being president. Not to mention women and the franchise. Cognitive dissonance eventually takes care of that sort of thing.

I'm more concerned the PA has allowed the islamofascists to make inroads into the area. That's a devil's compact but I don't think the majority of Palestinians agree with it. It has, of course driven Palestinian Christians away.

Given the poll results, it doesn't surprise me that the Israelis don't have a lot of trouble finding Palestinian agents to betray the Hamas and Hezbollah types.

I think if the Israelis actually seriously attacked Hamas and Hezbollah and more corrupt elements of Fatah, and drove them out of Palestine that most Palestinians would be that unhappy, although they might not say a whole lot at first. They would be pleased in fact, I suspect, if such action actually gave their democrats an opportunity to work without the risk of being murdered within a month. (This assumes the Israelis would in good faith leave them free to operate).
