What about if one view on an issue has 30% support, another on the same issue has 40% another has 10% and dozens of others have less then 1%. I would call both the 30 and the 40% views maintstream.

"Out of the mainstream" to me does not mean "a minority view" or "not in the majority" but rather refers to a view only haled by a small percentage that is also far away from most people's views.

If "in the mainstream" does mean "the majority view" to you then perhaps when we have a conversation we should avoid the term so as not to get bogged down in semantics.
