thing is, if the market rises, it'll be because of it climbing that wall. if it falls, it'll be because of the worries.

DuPont Sees Earnings Lower Than Expected

WILMINGTON, Del. (Reuters) - DuPont (NYSE:DD - news), the No. 1 U.S. chemical company, on Wednesday warned fourth-quarter earnings would fall short of its earlier expectations as results in the quarter's second half were lower than expected.

The Wilmington, Delaware-based company has been restructuring to deal with high energy costs and weak prices for chemicals and plastics.

The company now sees fourth-quarter earnings of between 31 cents and 33 cents, while Wall Street's average estimate was 33 cents, according to Thomson First Call.

DuPont said special items are not expected to have a net effect on results. The quarter's weak second half is expected to be largely offset by the company's lower tax rate for 2002, it said.

In October, DuPont said it would take a charge of about 4 cents a share in the fourth quarter to account for job cuts in its coatings and color business. That followed earlier plans to cut 5,500 jobs in its textiles division, maker of Lycra and Stainmaster brands.

DuPont shares closed at $44 in Tuesday trade on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).
