Wednesday January 15, 5:50 pm ET

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- A Japanese unit of Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) of the United States has agreed with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT or 9432) to jointly develop routers for broadband communications services for households, Kyodo News reported Thursday, citing Intel K.K. in Japan.
Intel will provide data processing units that will serve as the backbone of the envisioned routers for the services using the optic fiber communications networks of NTT's two regional carriers - NTT East Corp. and NTT West Corp.

High-speed routers using Intel's processing units can sort out huge volumes of data at 100 megabits per second and send them to several terminals, including personal computers.
