Telenor, others request 18 month extension for building of UMTS network

AFX European Focus
January 15, 2003 Wednesday

OSLO; Telenor ASA and other telecommunications companies have requested an 18-month extension for the building of the UMTS network, General Secretary of the Telecoms business' interest organisation IKT Norge, Per Morten Hoff said to daily Dagens Naeringsliv.

On behalf of the telecommunications business, Hoff has sent a request to the Storting (parliament) for an extension.

"We believe an extension is necessary because the mobile phones compatible with UMTS are delayed," Hoff said. Spokeswoman Eva Hildrum in the ministry of transport and communications said to the daily that the ministry will address the request for an extension in a report, the daily said.

The parliament is expected to discuss the request for an extension "sometime during the spring," it added.

Only Telenor and Netcom ASA hold the UMTS licence, and together the two companies expect to invest some 5 bln nkr in building the UMTS network.

The 'S' in TD-SCDMA stands for synchronous. What do you mean when you say asynchronous data delivery?
