indeed, this is how layoffs show up in economic statistics--as improved "productivity". however, as nominal growth declines, there is only so much juice one can milk from the amputation strategy. i consider productivity growth in the face of low or nonexistent GDP growth to be illusory.

also, i consider our GDP growth to be a poor indication of our economy's long-term economic health. in 2002, the US lost 600,000 manufacturing jobs. we replaced these with health care and real estate agents and mortgage brokers. pretty soon we will not have any manufacturing jobs and we will all just give each other back rubs or cash-out refis and call that an economy. not a good change in workforce composition.
