Just read it. It's beyond me what gets you so worked up about this. It's just le Carre offering his views and, because of his reputation, the fact he writes well, etc., getting more publicity than the rest of us. Why not just read it, decide it doesn't help you, then move on. In contrast with the right wing American punditry, le Carre's views aren't likely to have any effect in this country. So, all the more reason simply to walk on by on the other side.

As for whether it's serious left wing talk or not, of course it is. Fortunately, neither one of us gets to make that decision.

My guess is that you are seeing the kinds of arguments that are putting Tony Blair in a pickle right now. We'll see if he can navigate his way out of it. But Bush doesn't help Blair as he (Bush) continues to act more like the swaggering bully, "I'm getting sick and tired . . ." and less like the serious statesman. To say that's who Bush is, is, of course, to make the observation even more telling.
