Speaking of my grand unifying theory, I think that there is a a growing group in the US that his forming around the combination of fiscal conservatism, social liberalism and a lite touch of libertariansim. Andrew Sullivan calls these folks 'eagles'. They (we) are not natural Republicans nor Democrats. I think that Trent Lott was sacrificed to the 'eagle' part of the Republican party.

Nice point, Paul. The problem is that this incarnation of the Republican party misses on two out of the three on your list. It definitely ain't socially liberal. But you knew that. In my view, it's definitely not fiscally conservative. That would be worrying about balancing the budget. It's radical something or other on giving away tax money to the rich. Redistribution upward with a vengeance.

As for the libertarian part, I gather reproductive freedom doesn't rank very high on your list of libertarian principles. It's quite clear where this administration is on that one. In fact, the only libertarian item that jumps quickly to mind is their view that business should not have any limits on its actions.

As for Lott, I agree with you. That's why I expect the Bush folk to continue to come hard on items like Pickering, anti-choice, etc. because they have to shore up their southern base. They wanted Frist, granted, and they wanted to get rid of Lott, absolutely no question, but in doing so they damaged their relationship with the good ol' boys. They'll work a bit to repair it now.

Geez, it just looked up. It's getting dark out side; it's gotten dark outside. I've spent most of the aftertoon on this stuff.
