The basic issue is that we are encouraging irresponsibility. Breaking the link between act and consequence.

And the more places we do that, the worse off society becomes.


I agree with that. The problem in this case is whether we can afford to punish people for their irresponsibility in the traditional way. I don't know any way to do that that does not risk worse consequences than the failure to negatively reinforce the original irresponsibility. Turning people who don't have the attributes or desire to be parents into parents is a horrible solution. Repeating the mantra that sometimes life sucks does nothing to improve anyone's qualifications for parenting.
