I think it is more of a matter of surprise then military bashing. I think for some reason he was shocked to learn that I was in the military.

Regardless of how long, whether part time, whatever -- it is more of a commitment than a lot of us have made, so you get my respect for it. I've often regretted I didn't serve in the military. Of course, that was a different time, different place, different war...

Oh let me bash the VA army national guard so you can tell him I am unpatriotic.......it will make his day.
