Sperm Whales have a history of beaching themselves. Usually it starts with one that is sick or in distress and gets stuck in the shallows. Its calls alarm the others and because of the groups tight social cohesion, one or more will attempt to aid the first, themselves being stranded. This scenario is then repeated, with perhaps dozens of deaths.
If the first stranded whale is killed, the rest will likely not beach themselves.
