Many of the 'return to the mean' types thought that the old problems of the British who were defeated in Afghanistan and many others would visit the USA. I couldn't imagine other than what happened. The USA had no idea about the intricacies of Afghan life and all the blah de blah. They just bombed and shot anyone who had Taleban or Al Qaeda resemblance - which is why millions of regular Afghans ran for it [they knew they bore more than a passing resemblance to Al Qaeda even if some Al Qaedans were American, Australian and Arab]. Similarly, the 'quaqmirists' are wrong about Iraq. Afghanistan wasn't a repeat of Britain's 19th century experience and Iraq won't be a repeat of Vietnam. More likely a repeat of the Gulf War. The conflict will be much like a conflict between the chimpoids in the opening scene of 2001 A Space Odyssey and the space ship with Hal in charge. They are on different planets. Saddam won Iraq by conquest and will lose by conquest. That makes sense. He has no ethical basis to possess a large portion of the world's oil. If he can't hold onto it, tough luck. I consider the most ethical outcome is for the UN to take it over and use the oil to fund Iraq's development and reconstitution and militarization and policing of the United States of Freedom, which would replace the UN. Iraq could take over the world! Hey, that would be reverting to the mean. Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilisation once upon a time. Maybe Saddam would get his wish of Iraq leading a pan-Arab resurgence, but it wouldn't be him in charge - it would be the USF. I like that; United States of Freedom. Mqurice
