... incapable of even imagining insidious problems occuring in gov't, even when shown the evidence. Many are so authority-oriented they attribute exactly what the PR people want to synthetic political products like Bush Jr., things like "decency", "honor" etc., in direct contradiction to facts that come out daily, and his long personal history, mocking condemned prisoners etc etc.

Even if live television showed Bush Jr. shooting a political opponent and confessing to it, they would chalk that up to some sort of acceptable psychological justification.

A big part of it is visceral need - academics and pseudo-academics need gov't for funding, and are trained to bow for authority. So do military careerists, bureaucrats, and contractors. $2 trillion buys the "loyalty" of millions to ever-larger all-powerful gov't.

I see what Mo Udall meant when he said the stakes of the 2000 election were "awesome"
