FLAGGOT FURY
Their last meaningful employment was as extras on the filming of “Deliverance” in the North Georgia mountains about 35 years ago. Since that time they have earned meager sums recycling Bondo from auto junkyards and recapping mobile home tires. They’re called “Flaggots.” They’re the less-than two percent of Georgians who eat, drink, sleep and breathe the Confederate battle flag from the time they push aside the empty beer cans and roll of the couch in the morning until they spit out that last plug of tobacco and turn over to go to sleep at night.

Yesterday the Flaggots gathered around the state capitol in Atlanta to wave their flags and stain the sidewalks. They’re demanding a statewide referendum on the state flag. They want their Confederate flag back. Nothing else matters to them. You can tell them that they’re making Georgia look like a 1950’s segregationist throwback. They don’t care. You can tell them that people are laughing at them. They don’t notice. You can explain to them that the last thing that Georgia needs while it tries to turn it’s faltering economy around is the image of fuzzy-faced, toothless yahoos waving a flag that has come to be a symbol of racism .. they just grunt, scratch themselves, do a little nasal-digital exploration and walk away. You can show them how the liberals are going to take pictures and make videotapes of their marches and use them to portray Georgians as racists and they say “Well gosh darn! Do yuh really think ahm gonna be on telbision?”

So … for the rest of the United States, I just have one thing I want you to understand. These people are NOT Republicans. The Democrats are going to try to use the Flaggots as a symbol of Republican racism and bigotry. It just ain’t so. Studies of election results show that the people in rural Georgia who voted against Governor Roy Barnes were --- now listen carefully --- they were Democrats! They were Democrats who were ticked off at a Democratic Governor whom they felt betrayed them. Oh yeah! Sure the Democrats would like you to believe that these Flaggots are Republicans. If you forget to put on your deodorant in the morning you would like folks to believe that horrible smell is coming from someone else. It’s tough, though, when there’s only one other person in the room.

Anyway you look at it, in general African Americans are doing better in the metropolitan South, than in the metropolitan Midwest.

If it is because Republicans left the Northeast and Midwest (making that region more Democratic), moved to the South and challenged segregation, so much the better.
