I will take one indicator, for the time being:

Facts In Brief: More High School Competers Are Enrolling in College Immediately After Graduation, NCES Data Show
6/12/00 • Vol. 49, No. 11

The percentage of high school graduates who enroll in college in the fall immediately after graduation continues to increase, according to data in the latest edition of the National Center for Education Statistics' The Condition of Education.

The percentage of high school graduates who enrolled in college immediately after high school rose from 49 percent in 1972, to 66 percent in 1998.

Overall, the percentage of female high school graduates who enrolled in college immediately after high school rose from 46 percent in 1972, to 69 percent in 1998. For males, the rate was 53 percent in 1972 and 62 percent in 1998.

The percentage of female high school graduates who enrolled in a two-year college immediately after high school rose from 15 percent in 1973 (the first year such data is available) to 24 percent in 1998, while the rate for those attending a four-year institution rose from 28 percent to 45 percent.

For males, the percentage of high school graduates who enrolled in a two-year school immediately after graduation rose from 15 percent in 1973 to 24 percent in 1998 and the rate for those who enrolled in a four-year institution rose from 35 percent to 38 percent.

While the immediate college enrollment rate for whites has increased over time, from 50 percent to 69 percent between 1972 and 1998, the rate for African-American high school graduates fluctuated between 1972 and 1983. The rate then increased between 1984 and 1998, rising from 40 percent to 62 percent.

The rate for Hispanic high school completers has experienced no consistent growth over time. For example, the rate was 45 percent in 1972, reached 43 percent in 1982, 55 percent in 1992, but only 47 percent in 1998.

[Perusing the tables shows an African-American enrollment rate of 44.6% in 1972].
