Rangel was trying to perpetuate the myth that the poor and blacks in particular would shoulder a disproportionate share of the fighting.....

He's barking up the wrong tree. No modern president -- Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, or Bush -- has sent troops to war with offspring in the military. The premise of his stunt is meaningless.

Furthermore, it's unlikely we'll ever be involved in a war executed like Korea or Vietnam again. The number of soldiers put at risk of life is now generally limited to how many can be targeted at a single base strike. The biggest threat outside of WMD is friendly fire.

But the guy got some publicity, didn't he?
