Never thought about Arabic-derived words in Spanish, but now that you mention it, it's not surprising there are lots of them. The Moors, who were Arabic, controlled a large chunk of Spain for centuries. For most of that time, Moorish Spain was more advanced than the rest of Europe.

The situation is similar to French and English. The French (Normans) conquered most of England in 1066 and the nobility was largely Norman for centuries after.

If you have any words you want to keep, you better keep them away from English. It'll steal any it gets near. :-)
