I know a lot of people who home school their kids because they are so concerned. Alaska has an excellent program for home schooling because so many kids live in remote places where there are no schools. People in my city do it because they don't have much faith in the public school system.

My daughter got her degree in education here in Juneau at University of Alaska Southeast. She had problems with the prof who taught classroom techniques but had never had a classroom of her own outside of college. She now teaches down in Sacramento at a charter school run by Russian immigrants of the Pentacostal faith. I've visited her classroom several times. I told them bear stories. I got letters from the entire class. They were first graders, but they could definitely write. Those kids are learning to love learning, which is what they DON'T learn in too many schools.
