I thought today they got a guaranteed for the job they wanted when they sign up I don't believe they automatically get the job they want. However, "guaranteed job" may be attractive in an area where the dot.com implosion has left so many without jobs, without hopes of finding a job. Perhaps this explains the decision to enlist. If the economy were better, those kids would be going on to college. IMO

John, re <perhaps a lot of them figure they will never end up on the battle field... It is a small minority of troops that actually engage in battle on the field..> It must be almost safer in the USA military than not in it these days, including on battlefields. It's easier to shoot down a 747 full of civilians, or crash into the Twin Towers than to attack a USA military operation. Notwithstanding the Cole, Pentagon, and a few other instances. Military forces primarily defend themselves. My guess is that the major objection to being in the US military is lifestyle options and preference. Air conditioning in Iraq and the ablutions are probably not as good in Iraq as at Camp Pendleton where La Jolla babes are a short drive away. It's not like joining the French Foreign Legion or going over the top at Ypres or hiding on the beach at Gallipoli, Dunkirk or Omaha. Mqurice
