The U.S. used to be a cultural and moral role model. I think the whole world was becoming a better place through the difficult process of internationalisation of a world culture. The enemies that Bush makes are not his alone, they become the enemies of the U.S. The enemy list goes far beyond Bagdad or Kabul. In effect, the ordinary citizens of countries around the world become scornfull and if not enemies, than less friendly. America's image, and therefore Americas ability to influence is getting worse. The rest of the world feels less like imitating the U.S. by buying American fashions or entertainment or technology.

When the choice is available they will pick Airbus, or Seimens, or Great Wall computers. They will prefer grain from Argentina, perhaps not enough to boycott American goods, but enough to give the edge to another supplier. The U.S. has profited greatly by being the role model of the world, and we will suffer economicly, and in safety, and in spirituality as that image of being the country who tries to do right is lost.
