I think the point was that the author's statement was either very ill-informed and incorrect, or intentionally misleading so as to make a 1x overlay seem like a very dumb idea.

Whichever of these are true, helping the author out and trying to find some way to make his statement credible is not only a waste of time, it runs counter to our efforts to learn more about Qualcomm and the environment in which it does business, and share that knowledge with others of similar interest.

Robert,

Ben is correct in his interpretaion of the Gartner statement.

Gartner means that "political repercussion" is the reason for no roaming revenues .. that the GSM cabal would punish the GSM carrier that would install GSM1x. I don't know why Gartner wasn't explicit .. and forced us to make the inference. Maybe they are afraid of political repercussions themselves.

I tried to throw Gartner's "probably more lucrative" conclusion into question .. based purely on economics and technical performance .. ignoring the political viewpoint. My argument would be correct IMHO .. if the threat of political repercussion wasn't reality. I apologize if my post helped lead you down the wrong path.

A point that might help you. The CDMA2000 1x RAN may be paired with either IS-41 MAP or GSM MAP core networks. It is called 1x in either case. So there is no point in the GSM1x term .. unless it means a GSM RAN with a 1x RAN overlay.
