This could be a rumour meant to foment a coup attempt.

Good comment. Well, now we know at least that the Saudis are taking our intentions seriously. They sound pretty desperate to avoid a war. However a war goes, it's a bad look out for them.

If we succeed 100% - oust Saddam and establish a federated Iraqi democracy, they have new Iraqi oil flooding the market and an Arab democracy on their border. Not to mention new American prestige. Say what you like, this part of the world respects strength.

If we fail to stick around for the post-Saddam nation building (a reasonable fear on their part), they may find themselves with a Shi'ite entity (with oil fields) on their northern border, making invitations to the Saudi Shi'a, who are badly treated and happen to be sitting on top of the Saudi oil fields.

Anywhere in between, they may still have chaos and spreading rebellions on their northern border. The Saudis have not forgotten 1980 and the Iranian hijack of the Grand Mosque.

One can see why they are desperate to either keep the status quo or to replace Saddam with Saddam Lite. If they weren't such despicable hypocrites, one could almost feel sorry for them.
