This article says Rumsfield ordered 62.000 to the Gulf this week; that would push the total US deployment to over 120,000.

Nearly 10,000 Sailors and Marines Depart for Persian Gulf

AN DIEGO, Calif., Jan 14 (Reuters) - Seven San Diego-based U.S. warships carrying nearly 10,000 sailors and Marines departed for the Middle East on Friday as part of a troop buildup ordered last week by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

The deployment of troops and battle gear from the 45,000-member 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), described by military officials as the largest movement of the unit since the 1991 Gulf War, "has gone smoothly so far," U.S. Navy Fleet Commander Jacquie Yost said.

The troops shipped out on the USS Boxer, USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Cleveland, USS Dubuque, USS Anchorage, USS Comstock and USS Pearl Harbor, as hundreds of family members gathered at the port to bid them farewell.

The ships will anchor off the California coast for two days while equipment is loaded aboard by Hovercraft, Yost said.

The troops, 7,000 Marines and 3,000 sailors, were expected to return after a six-month deployment, Yost added.

Thousands of Marine reserves from across the country were deployed alongside the 1st MEF; others were ordered to help run Camp Pendleton, Miramar Marine Corps Air Station and the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona in place of the departing troops, Marine Forces Reserve spokesman Capt. Jeff Pool said earlier this week.

"The guys who are mobilizing are from all different jobs: military police, bridge makers, tanks, reconnaissance, infantry, headquarters support, truck companies, communications specialists, aviation units," Pool said. "Everything the reserves have is being mobilized."

The flotilla is part of a total U.S. deployment of 62,000 troops ordered to the Persian Gulf a week ago by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. A similar number of Marines and sailors are scheduled to depart from Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.

About 75,000 troops were sent to the Persian Gulf during the 1991 Gulf War.

<How many decades is dictatorship allowed in your view?>

As many as the people of that country choose to allow.

<when a government chooses to sponsor anti-US terrorism>

Show me credible evidence (not media hoopla) re Iraq and anti US terrorist activities.

<Consider it a post 9/11 categorical imperative... >

Consider this :

- for decades, India/Pakistan have had terrorist thingammies happen in the Kashmir region. 10's of thousands dead so far.

- for decades, Israel and its neighbors have had terrorist thingamies happen. 10's of thousands dead so far.

- for decades, IRA and UK have had terrorist thingammies happen. 10's of thousands dead so far.

- 9/11 : death count < 3000. I'm not minimizing the atrocity, trying to put it in perspective with events around the world.

Where was the US sense of "we have a mandate to fix things our way" during these decades ?
