HP launches products to increase computer capacity Monday January 20, 10:57 am ET AMSTERDAM, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ - News), the world's largest personal computer maker, launched new computers and services on Monday to help companies squeeze more capacity out of their existing storage networks. "Even if a company has zero sales growth, the data traffic keeps growing. That is a fundamental challenge," said Greg Reyes, chief executive of U.S. storage networking company Brocade (NasdaqNM:BRCD - News), which announced a partnership with H-P to develop smarter networks of strorage computers that could be located around the world. H-P will enable companies to use an average 85 percent of their potential storage capacity, up from an average 55 percent now, by knitting together most of the storage disk space that is available in a network, the company said. Currently much of the underutilised capacity is dedicated to a specific computer. The company claimed to have achieved returns on investment of more than 30 percent with early versions of these virtual storage networks used by French mobile telecoms provider Orange (Paris:ORA.PA - News) and British mutual life assurance provider Standard Life . H-P made the announcement at its annual enterprise computing event here, where it also announced new 'pay-as-you-go' computing services, new blade servers and a new generation of AlphaServers before the company moves to a new line of Itanium microprocessors from U.S. chip giant Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC - News). Microsoft and H-P further announced a strategic storage computing partnership, in which they will combine sales and marketing efforts and technical training.
