Frank, I took a look at several articles about those polls, and did not see one which simply gave the results without editorializing. So I can't tell whether the ACNielsen poll asked a sample of the entire population of Kashmir whether they favored independence over being part of India or Pakistan.

In 1995, this poll found that 77% favored independence.

This 1999 article states "According to an Indian opinion poll, 72% of Kashmiris interviewed in Indian-controlled Kashmir wanted independence."

This 2002 article states that in an unnamed poll, "Most indicated a desire for independence or extensive autonomy."

So I think I am right in stating that most of the residents of Kashmir/J&K want independence.
