Derrida is definitely on my grown up list; he's, whether you agree with him or disagree with him, one of a small number of great thinkers of the 20th Century; as for Hanson, it will not surprise you, he is on my toddler list, at best.

In the "I am for Capitalism, But" school, I picked up a new book at Barnes & Nobles this morning, Amy Chua, a Professor at Yale Law School, or so says the blurb, World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability.

The laudatory squibs on the back include one from your favorite, Thomas Sowell, that the book ". . . is a landmark achievement. It is a profound book, written in plain English, and challenging the very foundations of some glib--and dangerous--assumptions behind American foreign policy during recent administrations of both parties. This book should be read in the highest circles of decision -making, as well as by all those who like to consider themselves thinking people."

He likes the book.

The other squibs are from Barbara Ehrenreich, Randall Kennedy, and Strobe Talbott.

I'll let you know what I think. Oh, yes, here's the Amazon url.

Also picked up Michael Lind's new book, Made in Texas: George W. Bush and the Southern Takeover of American Politics. Interesting reading, I think. I've never taken Bush's Texas roots argument seriously since, to me, they were always Connecticut, recent arrivals. Lind, whose Texas roots are as ancient as mine, thinks otherwise. We'll see how he well he makes his arguments.

When I checked the thermometer this morning, I was certain it was broken. At 7:30 am it read 6 degrees. Enjoy the sun.
