Bucs will be left out in the cold

URL:http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/columnist/obrien/2003-01-16-pete_x.htm

Give Mike Brown credit for taking a step forward by hiring Marvin Lewis as head coach. Next up on Brown's agenda: Figuring out how to take two steps back.

And what the heck is going on in San Francisco? It's tough to take 49ers owner John York seriously when he fires a successful coach and then chooses to face the media by taking a conference call on the second floor of the team's training complex while the reporters are on the first floor.

In gratuitous act of self-promotion (I'm learning the ways of ESPN), I wanted to give you a heads up that I will be in San Diego next week and writing a column daily beginning Tuesday.

Pete's Picks will also be delivered in a unique, one-time only format and we'll be resurrecting our audio Webcasts of In the Trenches. So ya'll come back now, ya hear?

Tampa Bay (plus 4) at Philadelphia

The key trend to examine in this game is that the Buccaneers are 1-0 in their last one when the temperature has been under 40 degrees. Okay, so the one came against the Bears and their third-string quarterback Henry Burris. And yes, Tampa Bay was 0-21 in cold weather games before that, but hey, I'm just trying to throw them a bone.

But the truth is, I can't envision the Eagles — with possibly the most raucous crowd ever in the final game at Veterans Stadium — losing to a team a team with so little juice on offense.

And I also believe that I'm not meant to go to San Diego – home of SeaWorld – to solve such mysteries as "Who has the bigger blowhole, Shamu or Warren Sapp?"

EAGLES, 23-13

Tennessee (plus 7½) at Oakland

I see 85% of you that responded to a USATODAY.com survey like the Raiders to win. I do to, but before you put too much money down on this one there are some things to consider:

After a rough start, Tennessee gave up an average of 14.7 points in its last 11 games.
Since Jeff Fisher took over, the Titans have the best road record in the league.
Tennessee has covered four of the last five meetings.
The Titans are the only team that has not lost a game since December.
RAIDERS, 20-17

Last week: 3-1 straight up (141-77 season); 2-2 against the spread (110-102-6 season). The Upset Special is 6-10. The Lock of the Week is 13-3 (The Upset Special and Lock of the Week records are straight up). Point spread is based on Danny Sheridan's line as of Thursday. Feedback can be sent to fbpete@usatoday.com.
