The dropout rates for blacks and Hispanics are almost three times that of whites; 11% and 11.3% vs 4.5% respectively. So progress is being made but we're not there yet. The higher drop out rate shows that they are not being discriminated against in admission. If only the most exceptional black candidates where admitted then the dropout rate would be lower. No one said they were........however, what the higher drop out rates reflect is the impact of racism on these sub groups. No question things are improving but they're still not there yet.....otherwise, the dropout rates would not be so disparate between the whites and the minorities. So what? Is the goal to move people up the food chain, or to keep them away from anything that may challenge them and make them uncomfortable? The goal isn't to move anyone up the food chain, it is to give them a chance to move themselves up which you do by not discriminating against them now, but not by discriminating in their favor or lowering standards for them. This would be fine if the effects of discrimination had been eradicated but it has not, and a significant underclass still exists in this country. You don't eliminate 200 years of abuse in 40. That is as Bush said "the soft bigotry of low expectations". Instead look to end further discrimination and try to improve primary and secondary education for all. They're just words......Mr. Bush rarely speaks the full truth. Liberals are smart enough to know that coddling people only makes them dependent. You don't believe the bs that Coulter and D.Ray spout re liberals, do you? All anyone is asking that there be some leveling out of the playing field during the admissions process. Obviously, there are suspicions. Then what explains these higher incidences of illegitimate births, more difficult conditions etc? To a large extent by the actions of the people that have these disadvantages or the actions and choises of their parents. Past racism has a negative lingering effect but when racism was much which illegitimacy and drug use where lower among blacks so it can't be used as an exuse. That's not true.......before drugs were plentiful in this country, the level of alcoholism was higher in minority groups than the mainstream white population. With the Native American populations, it became a chiche........"the no good, stinking drunk injun". TP was not talking about individual wrong doing.....but rather wrong doing on a societal level Society is the collection of individuals. Anything that was done wrong was done by an individual or a lot of individuals. There are societal wrongs committed by the society at large and then there are individual wrongs.....crimes committed by individuals. Please, lets not dumb down here. If you can't make a convincing case, concede that point and move on.......please. Besides, most of the wrong doers croaked long ago. Should we go after their descendants and make them pay retribution? No, but that is exactly what AA is an attempt to do. Where have you seen AA demand retribution from descendants of slave owners? The experiences that got the poor whites of Appalachia to where they are are not the same as those of poor blacks. However, most universities give pts based on socio economic status and clearly Appalachians would benefit. Should whites who are under represented in most sports get bonus points (but non-whites would get a bonus in hockey)?" Yup, I am afraid so. Thats just stupid, but if you feel that way when can I expect my garunteed NBA contract? After all the NBA doesn't have a proportial amount of sub six feet overweight white men. Stupid? Actually, I think your response shows a lack of something...if not smarts, something else. BTW why are there rarely any players under six foot on NBA teams? How many black CEO's are there? How many cabinet post secretaries? How many SC justices are black? I don't know how many CEOs but its a growing number. As for cabinet posts and SC its about the same as the percentage of blacks in the country. If you consider Bush's most influential advisors its far above their percentage in the population. Yeah, the numbers are growing real fast........there are three out of the Fortune 500. That's .06% of the total Fortune 500. If I remember correctly, blacks make up over 11% of the population. Now lets see.....there is one Secretary in the president's cabinet....out of 14 or 7%. And one National Sec. Advisor.......do you still want to talk about tokenism? Please note that in the corporate world, the percentage is far and away much smaller. div2000.com Yes, the condition of public schools has deteriorated dramatically in the past 30 years. Now lets look at the reasons why... Nice story but it doesn't give a reason for the schools poor performance let alone a valid excuse. The resources available to the schools has increased. They are not being starved of tax money as white kids go to private schools they are spending more and achieving less. Now conservatives want to give a chance to poor kids and minorities that have been left behind in failing public schools but the Democrats have opposed these efforts so they can help the teacher's unions at the expense of the children in the failing schools. Nice story? You tell your version to the poor, elitist. "It will be a first step towards treating people according to the content of their character (and their qualifications) rather then the color of their skin." How can you expect to have that arrangement when we still don't have it with AA? The question doesn't make any sense. AA is an example of the exact opposite of treating people according to their character or qualifications. It like saying, "how can we have peace if people stop shooting, when we don't have peace now that people are shooting at us?". You're stuck, aren't you?
