In my case, I hire minorities, as they are often the best available.

The entire concept of AA is flawed. Imagine if evolution responded to Affirmative Action rather than "survival of the fittest" and "natural selection".

By using AA, we tinker with the order of nature, not consistently promoting the best, but in fact, often promoting the worst. Is that a good thing? By doing so we ENCOURAGE individuals to RELY on AA for long-term survival.

I have no objection to helping out people who are unable to help themselves. But the University of Michigan case goes far beyond that by providing a huge, insurmountable advantage for anyone with a black skin.

On the political side of things, I think it was more evidence of true leadership that Bush was willing to make the statement he did only a few weeks after the burning of Trentt Lott at the stake.

unless the minorities are willing do what it takes to become as valuable of an employee
In my experience they have. Techical and engineering departments tend to be meritocracies and those who don't perform tend to transfer elsewhere.
