Semi-OT: Mike, the psychology of the ‘opposition’ is at times truly amazing… I have a good close friend, who lives with his wife and his teenage daughter in Manhattan, in the E. 50’s. Unusually bright and perceptive fellow. He was profoundly shocked by 9/11. To my enormous surprise, shortly afterwards, he started trying to “understand” the terrorists, blame our policies in the ME, he was very critical about the war in Afghanistan… After several sharp conversations, gradually I realized what was the common denominator: as far as he was concerned, America – and her Government – couldn’t do a thing right.

At some point I confronted him – he has been regressing back to the 60’s – early 70’s, to his hippie days, to the days of anti-Vietnam and anti-Nixon. His old mechanisms of dealing with reality had taken over.

After a while, he agreed with my assessment. I think that he has been gradually pulling his head out of his arse.
