The problem is that you want to ignore all the years of Jim Crow

Not at all. Jim Crow is a great example of what happens when decisions about who will be accepted in to positions or who will be allowed to do what, are racially determined. There is no reason to ignore it. Its one of the best examples for my point.

and hope that it and its effects have gone away. They haven't, and with any abuse, there has to be a payback to neutralize the effects.

Payback can only rightfully be extracted from the people that caused the harm and most of them are not around anymore. Yes there are lingering effects. Any time there is a great injustice done to many people the effects can linger for generations. But blacks are not the only people who's ancestors faced injustice. It's impossible to even figure out a fair balance of all the competing claims for compensation and even making the attempt rewards the ability to present yourself as a victim more then the ability to get on with life and do what it takes to succeed. There is no way to ever compensate for all the possible lingering effects of racism or other large injustices. We just have to move on and do what we can to improve ourselves and our country. AA is continuing the fight over old injustices instead of trying to prevent new ones.
