No Ted. It is true for the US now. Most of the very top of the richest people did not start out that way.

The richest people in the US (not necessarily in order but the order changes with the ever shifting stock market) are

Gates, Buffet, Paul Allen, the Walton family, Steve Balmer, and Micheal Dell. Only the Walton family inherited the wealth and one generation back you get Sam Walton who did not start out wealthy.
