<<...but the fiscal irresponsibility of our current
administration often makes me wonder why i should
be so responsible...>>

el deficit: I know how you feel...Our Government has NOT been setting a good example for us -- Its like they have a credit card where the balance can be raised every month and the accountability continually gets pushed to the back burner.

We all have learned some painful lessons compliments of the boom period. Unfortunately, I had to take on some debt due to an investment in a young private software firm. Believe it or not, I have some credit card balances (again)...I have been debt free and will have to make big sacrifices to achieve that milestone again. The next year will be a time to rebuild finances - intelligently. I wish the government would do the same thing...here are some quotes to ponder...

'Adversity introduces a man to himself.'
-Unknown

'the price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side.'
-James Baldwin

'A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.'
-Francis Bacon

'You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take.'
-Wayne Gretzky

'Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody thought.'
-Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

'There's never time to do it right. But there's always time to do it over.'
-Unknown

'Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.'

'Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.'
-Denis Diderot

I'm off to my meet with a client up north....Hope you have a good week.

declare bankruptcy, focus on own mistakes, not USGovt

your mistakes seem greater (far far greater) than the fiscal mistakes being made by Bushy Admin as they deal with the colossal post-bubble mania effing nightmare mess handed to them in the autumn of 2000, but much smaller than the fiscal mistakes made by Clinton Admin (e.g. strong dollar, gold reserve raid, stock bubble, rape of Social Security Trust Fund, evaporation of pension funds)

diehard liberals slay me, deflecting their own errors of judgment and poor understanding of economics on other people, when they refuse to deal with their own messes

in 1996, I declared BK Chapter 13 for restructuring
I blew my money on smallcap stocks after Greenspasm's hurried rate hikes in 1994, then followed it with massive debt-financed losses in the futures markets
I admitted my mistakes, declared BK, and moved on
it required settling with eleven Mastercard banks, but I did it
they dog me and will continue to dog me until Sept 2003
that marks the end of the seven year "stench"

and yes, millionaire status was achieved in Jan2000
it came from new savings, Staples income, Staples stock options, and discerning that a tech stock "meltup" was coming at the Y2K arrival, not a Snafu-ridden world collapse as many fools expected

the longer you wait, the more painful it will get
it gets better, but only if you face reality and deal with it
put aside pride, because that is your primary enemy

your present maneuvers match precisely the lack of willingness within the currency economy and financial markets to face the reality of cleansing the balance sheets
since 2000, personal balance sheets have horrendously worsened, making the recovery impossible

I said in early 2002 that 15-20% of the US population will be forced to file for personal bankruptcy
I stand by this prediction
the longer the wait, the worse the hole to dig out from

good luck to you
it is very tough

/ jim

p.s. a college friend in Vermont refused to file for BK in 1991 after his newly purchased car dealership went under very quickly during the GulfWar in Kuwait... he had inventory lined up along roadways for five miles... six years later in 1997 he said the biggest mistake he made was not filing for bankruptcy RIGHT AWAY... he said it was his pride that stopped him, which he deeply regretted... he carried a $150k debt for years, paying it down slowly... he tried to put his son and daughter thru college, and is only now out from under it all
