Black marque for New Tel chief

FOR a bloke who loves cars, denying ownership of a $400,000 black Aston Martin is a strange thing to do. But then these are not normal times for Peter Malone.

The Perth-based entrepeneur, who runs New Tel, had previously boasted to New Tel employees he had taken delivery of the car. But this week it appeared he hadn't.

The latest claim came as job losses were announced and as the ability of New Tel even to pay salaries looked under threat as the company teetered on the verge of collapse.

Those worrying about the pay cheques will include Malone's father Francis, who – in July last year at the age of 79 – was inexplicably employed at New Tel on an annual salary of $30,000.

According to an anonymous caller to The Australian this week, who identified himself only as a business associate of Mr Malone, the New Tel boss wanted to stress he had "not taken any recent deliveries of motor cars". He added that as far as he knew Malone didn't even own an Aston Martin.

It appeared to be an attempt to pour cold water on reports in The Australian earlier this week that Malone had parked a new black DB7 Aston Martin Vantage at his beachside mansion in Perth.

The anonymous caller described Malone as a fairly frugal bloke, adding: "He picked me up from Perth airport at the weekend in a 1978 Mercedes."

But employees at Perth-based prestige car dealer Alf Barbagallo tell a different story. Like how the New Tel chief didn't just buy a new Aston Martin Vantage – he had it extended.

"He definitely has," said one when asked if Mr Malone had bought an Aston Martin. "He even had it stretched".

Mr Malone extended his new Aston Martin by 15cm at the cost of at least $100,000, turning his expensive UK import into a $400,000 dollar beast.

The customised car was modified in the UK and, according to online prestige car magazine Classicdriver.com which featured photos of the car, Mr Malone was a hands-on customer.

The magazine breathlessly described in January this year the long wheel base Aston Martin, which it said Malone helped develop.

"This specially commissioned long wheelbase derivative of the best selling Aston Martin of all time offers rear seat passengers an additional 150mm of leg and kneeroom without compromise to the comfort and accommodation of either the driver or front seat passenger," it said.

It added the extension added about €75,000 ($200,000) to resale value of the car.
