I think the relevant business model that equipment manufacturers want to use is the model that Microsoft has used over the years. That is, to incorporate more and more function in the product you sell. That will apply to the storage side as well as the OS side.

MSFT is already in this to some extent, but just like browsers, system maintenance tools, multimedia, etc. they will have it on their OS and in successive upgrade cycles the competition will seem less relevant.

Announcing a "partnership to develop" without any additional details is an empty public relations move.

But you agree it sounds like something more than a reseller arrangement, no? The wording doesn't sound like a reseller deal to me.
