Hurray for the American public and democracy while it still exists. Meanwhile Britain sending 26,000 troops to Persian Gulf

LONDON -- Britain will send a land force of 26,000 troops to the Persian Gulf in preparation for possible military action against Iraq, Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said today.

Hoon announced the large deployment in the House of Commons, where opposition from his own Labor Party has been strong to a U.S.-led war against Iraq, unless it is first approved by the U.N. Security Council.

The deployment is a dramatic increase in Britain's military build-up for any Iraq war. Britain already has dispatched its biggest naval task group in 20 years toward the Gulf for long-planned training exercises; the ships are carrying 3,000 Royal Marines and 5,000 sailors.

The new deployment, which will take place in the coming weeks, would include 120 Challenger tanks and 150 Warrior armored personnel carriers, Hoon told Parliament.

A deployment on this scale is "no ordinary measure," Hoon said, but he also emphasized that "none of the steps we are taking represents a commitment of British forces to military action. A decision to employ force has not been taken, nor is such a decision imminent or inevitable."

Britain has been the strongest supporter of the United States' tough line on Iraq.

No way to stop this reaction. Does it justify trying to stop demos? No. But if you take part, you should understand the downside of what you are doing.

...and whose power you are increasing. ANSWER just made themselves a bigger player by this successful show of organization. It doesn't matter if most of the protesters don't really support ANSWER, they gain clout anyway. Just as Farakhan did after his Million Man March.

As Jane Galt asked, would you go on a march on behalf of abandoned puppies that was organized by the KKK?
