PT: Im not sure I follow you. But remember that 50 years ago, liberal elites were compelled to define themselves as "tough." They were "tough-minded" or "tough" with the Soviets, etc. All of which, of course, was an outgrowth of the anti-red hysteria. Liberals in organizations like the ADA needed to distance themselves from the "Communist" label (amazingly you still see this same smear right here on this little thread in 2003). Those "tough-minded" liberals like Allen Dulles were at the table for such resounding triumphs as Iraq, Guatemala, Cuba, Vietnam etc. etc etc. ad nauseam. M2
