One of the reasons why this debate goes on forever is not just the obvious point that we disagree on the issue but that we disagree on how we see people. I see people as individuals. I don't see how helping out Mary makes up for an abuse commited against Bob even if they have the same skin color. It doesn't lessen the injustice done to Bob in any way and might just compound the total injustice if Mary gets the special bonus at the expense of Albert who is innocent of wrong doing to either Mary or Bob.

But if you see people primarily as parts of a race, and if you think it is right that suns and daughters be punished for sins of their parents the affirmitive action makes some sort of sense.

talk of merit or excellence is considered unimportant or at least subordinate to the goal of "proportional representation."

I repeat, the purpose of state universities is not to try and rank the top test takers. The purpose is to provide an education to those who have shown the proficiency to handle the curriculem. If there are more applicants than slots then there are many ways to divide up the space, nearly all better than a monolithic adherence to a standard test score.
