Jewish boys get circumsised, don't they?----

Yeah, but they dont get their nuts cut off. Islamic female circumcision removes the clit.

Re circumcision

In Islam, it is explained as a measure of hygiene rather than some holy practice. They might have a point - hot desert days, not much water, not much of a washing habit. Removing the foreskin might have done the Muslims of those days a world of good.

I haven't read the bible, but I get the drift that love and peace was his message

Err, yes, in some places. In others, however, there is some strange cruelty, often at the hands of God or people held in high esteem by God - take a look at the story of Lot who offers his two virgin daughters to be gang-raped by an army of soldiers if only they would stop banging on his door, or my personal favourite, Elisha who prays to God to do something about the 35 or so kids who make fun of his bald head and God sends two she-bears to tear the children into bloody bits.

Moral of the story: Religions do not always talk about peace and love. Often they talk about stuff we would find inhuman at this day and age, which their followers conveniently forget all about and just attack other religions for similar stuff.

Jesus did not really comment in the new testament about wars except to say that they would come ... but as to military service: Some who were in it asked John the Baptist "what about us?"

He did not tell them to leave the military. He told them to not take money from anyone by force and to be content with their wages ...

bible.gospelcom.net

In Acts the story is told of the conversion of the Roman Centurion. His conversion experience did not require him to leave the military, but the account is not about his military service per se -- it simply identified him as a centurion -- commander of 100 soldiers.

bible.gospelcom.net

But regarding His kingdom -- Jesus said that it was different -- not established by military means

John 18
35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?"
36 Jesus answered, "(1) My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [1] of this realm."
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "(2) You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, (3) to testify to the truth. (4) Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

i.e. Jesus' own words didn't foster the crusades ... but misappropriation and misapplication of them.

None of these statements really bear on whether or not states can wage war and be just in doing so according to the Bible. Guiding principles are there which need to be extended with care -- my own view is that a "pre-emptive" strike is hardly justifiable -- it smack of imperialism and denies the sovreign rights of other states to exist. We simply pick and choose which ones we believe have a right to exist based on our own preferences??

But on the larger pt -- Bush's claim to piety or his own beliefs: As a Christian, I don't advocate the position of any and everyone who calls themselves Christian -- including the president -- I applaud his living consistent with those principles when he does and hope that he seeks the guidance that he needs.

Frankly, I'm a bit shocked at the polls that say support is widespread -- everyone I talk to has deep reservations about the attack and don't think it is either wise or timely.
