(The company confirmed the selection of preferred suppliers, upgrades Nortel status as backup bidder)

SK Telecom Co Ltd confirmed that its unit SK IMT has selected Samsung Electronics Co and LG Electronics Inc as preferred suppliers of 3G WCDMA wireless service equipment, with the two selected from a group of five bidders.

At the same time, it has also picked Nortel Networks Corp as a 'preliminary' candidate in case the two preferred companies do not perform satisfactorily.

Nokia Corp and Alcatel were the other two bidders.

SK IMT will work with the prospective suppliers in developing IMT-2OOO systems and handsets, with a view to launching 3G WCDMA wireless services in the second half of 2004, it said.

Earlier today a spokesman for SK Telecom said no decision has been made in picking preferred suppliers.
