NEW YORK, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Software maker Mercury Interactive Corp. (NasdaqNM:MERQ - News) on Wednesday posted fourth-quarter profits at the top end of hopes as sales grew 30 percent, and forecast solid growth in the first-quarter and year ahead.

We fared very well and actually beyond our expectations," Chairman and Chief Executive Amnon Landan said in a phone interview that followed the report.

"They pre-announced that their results would be better-than-expected. And they were better-than-expected," said Goldman Sachs analyst Tom Berquist of the upbeat results.

Revenue rose 30 percent to $117.8 million from $90.3 million in the year earlier quarter.
